Block Printing
Jan-Feb 2014

In this unit students will learn the importance of safety in art as each student gets to carve their own linoleum block!  Learning the proper carving techniques, ink application, and pressure will ensure quality prints.  Each student will create a series of prints exploring the use of different colors and patterned blocks layered on top of one another. The final print will be the student's initial-carved on their own-printed in black or white as the top layer. These will look impressive displayed all together, as well as individually in unique ways.

Perspective Drawing
Nov/Dec 2013
Where we are in time and place: Structure Study

All great structures in our world were once imagined and designed by an artist. In this unit we will be learning the rules and tools to make these structures come to life through perspective drawing. Using just a horizon line, vanishing point, and perspective lines, we can make magic and drawing basic forms in realistic perspective. This unit will build on our understanding of forms (as learned last year in grade 4) and help us learn the basic building blocks for architecture and design.

Unit 1: Collaborative Art (Zentangle Drawings)
(Sept-Oct)
In this unit we'll explore the concept of repetition (reviewing pattern, shape, and line) and develop our drawing skills.  Zentangle drawing is contemporary style of art that is recognised for its structured repetition and fine details, very similar to mehendi work seen in India, but usually only in black and white. Students will explore their personal style, exchange ideas with peers, and develop their ability to collaborate through a group project.  We will also be focusing on the purpose for the art we make and students will be able to determine what and where they will create for their final project.  Collaborative art requires planning, patience, and mutual respect upon members in a group.  Conflict resolution skills and peace management will be essential for the successful completion of the collaborative zentangle artworks.
